Editor's Cut

Pros

Photon PUN 2 is widely regarded as an exceptionally accessible entry point for multiplayer development, offering a shallow learning curve, extensive community documentation, and a vast library of tutorials that simplify complex networking tasks like matchmaking and state synchronization. It is highly effective for rapid prototyping and smaller-scale projects, particularly in VR, allowing developers to offload server-side infrastructure management to Photon's cloud services, which significantly reduces the technical barrier to entry for solo developers and small teams.
Use PUN 2 only for rapid prototyping or low-stakes hobbyist projects, but avoid it for any serious commercial title where security, scalability, and long-term cost-efficiency are non-negotiable requirements.

Cons

The platform suffers from a restrictive and potentially prohibitive pricing model based on Concurrent Users (CCU) that can become financially unsustainable as a game scales, alongside significant security vulnerabilities stemming from its client-authoritative architecture, which makes games highly susceptible to cheating. Users also report frustrating technical hurdles, including poor integration with the Unity Package Manager, outdated documentation, and occasional stability issues that can jeopardize long-term projects, leading some developers to view it as a legacy solution compared to more modern, performant alternatives like Fusion.
